National Palace of Mafra (Palácio Nacional de Mafra) Tours

Get a glimpse of Portuguese royal life with a visit to the National Palace of Mafra (Palácio Nacional de Mafra), one of the largest buildings in Europe. Built in 1717 to commemorate the birth of King Joao V’s daughter, the baroque and neoclassical complex has around 1,200 rooms across the palace, convent, library, and basilica.
The Basics
Stroll the grand hallways of this regal residence on a day trip from Lisbon. Peruse thousands of books in the library; marvel at one of the world’s largest domes, six opulent organs, and 11 chapels at the basilica; and admire the ornate furniture in the Royal Apartments. You can combine a tour of Mafra with visits to Ericeira, Queluz, Sintra, and Obidos to discover even more palaces along the western coast of Portugal.
Things to Know Before You Go
- Mafra National Palace is a must-visit for architecture lovers and royalty aficionados.
- You can purchase tickets for the entire complex or just the basilica.
- Book a private tour to avoid long lines and get a comprehensive overview of the palace.
- Wear comfy shoes and be prepared for a lot of walking around the 409,028-square-foot (38,000-square-meter) complex.
- Large suitcases or backpacks are not allowed in the palace.
- Mafra National Palace is inaccessible to people with reduced mobility.
How to Get There
Mafra National Palace is approximately 25 miles (40 kilometers) north of central Lisbon. Mafrense buses regularly leave from Ericeira, Sintra, and Lisbon’s Campo Grande station. Alternatively, drive or take private transport via the A8, A16, or A21 highway.
When to Get There
Mafra Palace is open from 9:30am to 5:30pm, and the basilica from 9:30am to 1:30pm and 2pm to 4pm, Wednesday to Monday. The complex is closed every Tuesday, January 1, Easter Sunday, May 1, Ascension Thursday, and December 25. Crowds are heaviest during the summer, so arrive early in the day for the best experience.
A Royal Residence Fit for a Child
Mafra Palace was built to celebrate the healthy birth of Maria Barbara of Portugal (who became queen of Spain). Construction began in 1717, and for more than 40 years, between 15,000 and 25,000 workers helped construct the palace. The Portuguese colonies’ immense wealth funded its construction, though it almost bankrupted the country.
