National Sanctuary of Christ the King (Cristo Rei) Tours

National Sanctuary of Christ the King (Cristo Rei)
Towering above Lisbon is the National Sanctuary of Christ the King (Cristo Rei), built to thank God for protecting Portugal during World War II. The 361-foot (110-meter) monument, which looks out at the historic city over the Tagus River and 25th of April Bridge, is incredibly popular for its panoramic views of Lisbon.

The Basics

A beacon of protection for all Lisboetas, Christ the King—known locally as Cristo Rei—is made entirely of cement and can be seen from various points in the city. Many sailing and catamaran tours cruise right under the nearby 25th of April Bridge and offer a glimpse of the monument, and a few other city sightseeing tours point out the landmark and discuss its influence—Rio de Janeiro’s famous Christ the Redeemer. For a closer look, book a tour of the southern portion of Lisbon.

Things to Know Before You Go
  • The view from the National Sanctuary of Christ the King (Cristo Rei) is incomparable to any other in Lisbon, as it takes in the entire city from the other side of the river.
  • If you would like to worship, there is a small chapel at the base of the monument.
  • There is little shade at the sanctuary, so wear sun protection during your visit.
  • The entire monument is accessible to wheelchair users, with an elevator to the statue and paved walkways in most of the area.
How to Get There
The sanctuary is a 20-minute drive from central Lisbon to Almada, using the 25th of April Bridge; a northbound toll is required to return. Alternatively, take the train to Pragal station or the ferry from Cais do Sodré, and then ride bus 101 to Cacilhas to the statue.

When to Get There
Christ the King is open from 9:30am to 6:30pm Monday through Friday and until 7pm on weekends in summer, and from 9:30am to 6:15pm daily in winter. For the best views, visit under clear, cloudless skies. Rainy days are not ideal, as the views are obscured, plus the viewing platform is exposed to the elements.

More Than Just Views
Many people flock to the National Sanctuary of Christ the King (Sanctuário Nacional de Cristo Rei) for the panoramic views of Lisbon, but there is much more to this monument. The Christ statue is reaching out to embrace the city, comforting it from the ravages of war. People from all over Portugal visit to give thanks and pray that Christ continues to watch over the country and keep it safe.

We invite you to join us on a tour along the Tagus River. Come and visit Lisbon in a different way, be amazed by it’s colours, the way they spread over the hills and touch the river. We will sail from the Doca de Santo Amaro (Santo Amaro Dock under the bridge), to the Praça do Comércio, one of the most beautiful plazas in the word. From there we can see the old neighborhoods of Lisbon: Chiado, Baixa, Castelo and Alfama. Then it’s time to cross to Cacilhas on the other side of the river to get the widest possible view of the city. Sail close to the Cristo Rei on the south bank, cross under the bridge and sail to Belém to see its tower. On the way back you will see how the people of Lisbon love to walk, sit and chat by the side of the river; usually the banks are full of people enjoying the sun, the river and boats passing by.
