The Basics

This Disney-like castle in the clouds is one of the most-visited attractions in Portugal and a popular day trip from nearby Lisbon. A shady, winding road leads travelers up through Parque das Merendas to the palace, perched 1,476 feet (450 meters) above sea level. Within the palace, it’s possible to walk the walls and see inside the turrets, marvel at the Victorian and Edwardian furnishings within, and explore the surrounding Pena Park and its spectacular landscaping. The most convenient and rewarding way to explore the complex is on a guided half- or full-day tour from Lisbon, which could include other stops such as Cascais, Quinta da Regaleira, Queluz Palace, or even a local winery for a tasting.

Small group tour to Sintra, Pena Palace, Regaleira, Cabo da Roca and Cascais
We did this trip as a private group of 7. Our driver, Josef, was very knowledgeable and passionate about showing his group a good time. He was sharing information throughout the drive, kind towards children, and patient. This trip is highly recommended!

Sintra and Cascais Private Tour with Pena Palace Ticket
Luis was an excellent tour guide and this tour was an unforgettable experience. We saw everything we could wish for and more and we also had ample "exploring time" while staying on schedule. If I ever book a Lisbon based tour again, I would request Luis in a heartbeat. We had such a great time!

Sintra and Cascais Private Tour with Pena Palace Ticket
Our tour guide, Sandra, was wonderful. Sandra is very knowledgeable with the rich history of the region and beyond, which added great context and perspective to the breathtaking views and architectures. This tour comes highly recommended and I’m glad we opt for the private option. We had a wonderful time. Thank you so much.

Small group tour to Sintra, Pena Palace, Regaleira, Cabo da Roca and Cascais
Had a great day exploring Pena Palace, Regaleira, and Cabo da Roca with Caio. Caio was personable and humorous. He gave us a brief history of each location then gave plenty of time to explore on our own. He remained in good contact with the group via text to keep us on schedule. He had great recommendations for traditional pastries in Sintra as well as restaurants for lunch in the seaside town of Cascais. We had a great time with Caio and would highly recommend the tour.

Pena Palace, a definite must see!

Visit to the Palácio da Pena Sintra half day tour
We took the half day trip to Pena Palace with hotel pick up. We received an email the day before of who would be picking us up and what time. This was perfect for us since we did not know Lisbon at all. We chose the 8:30 am pick up time so we could leave most of our afternoon open. Our guide Antonio was prompt and friendly. Since we would have been too early by the time we arrived to the area, we made a brief stop in Sintra for a quick coffee. I let him know that my primary focus was to take photos at Pena Palace and since it was just my daughter and Me, he was happy to allow time to do so. The walk from the entry to the Palace was steep and he was patient and told me to take my time and stop a minute and rest as needed. Antonio said that he loves his work as a tour guide and it really shows! He shared the history with us of the Palace and made our day great from start to finish! Also, it is best to go early morning when they first open since by noon the queue to get in is extremely long and it can be hot waiting in the sun…. We are so glad we went, a definite must see!

Sintra and Cabo da Roca with Pena Palace Full-Day Small Group Tour from Lisbon
Great time and love the small group tours. Although the Palace of Pena is a classic example of over-tourism, it’s a must see. With Igor’s connections, our wait was barely 10 minutes. He knows his way around, and knows his Portugal!

How to Get to the Pena National Palace

The town of Sintra is set about an hour from Lisbon by train or 40 minutes by road. From the train station, Bus 434 continues on to the main part of town and then ascends the hill to Pena Palace. From the Sintra town center, it's also possible to make the hour-long climb to the palace on foot.

When to Get There

Pena National Palace (Palacio Nacional da Pena) is generally open daily from 9:45am to 7pm, while the park grounds are open from 9:30am until 8pm. July and August tend to be the busiest months in Sintra, particularly between 10am and 4pm when many visitors from Lisbon come for a tour of the royal palaces and Moorish castle. Expect temperatures in the high 80s during this time of year. To avoid the crowds (and the worst of the heat), arrive at the ticket office first thing in the morning, preferably on a weekday.

Other Things to Do in Sintra

If you’re in Sintra to see the Pena Palace, you’ll find a range of other attractions to check out as well. Many visitors choose to make a circuit of the area’s three royal palaces: the National Palace of Pena, National Palace of Sintra, and the Palace of Quelez. The Castle of the Moors, another part of the Cultural Landscape of Sintra UNESCO World Heritage site, is also worth visiting.
