Vasco da Gama Bridge (Ponte Vasco da Gama) Tours

star-5
7 Reviews
Vasco da Gama Bridge (Ponte Vasco da Gama)
Europe’s longest bridge stretches 11 miles (18 kilometers) over the Tagus Estuary in Lisbon. Taking approximately 3,300 workers only 18 months to construct, the cable-stayed Vasco da Gama Bridge (Ponte Vasco da Gama) is a modern marvel built to ease congestion from Lisbon’s other famous span—the 25th of April Bridge (Ponte 25 de Abril).

The Basics
Inaugurated in 1998 for the World Expo, the long and curvaceous Vasco da Gama Bridge is located in Lisbon’s rebuilt Park of Nations (Parque das Nações) district and can be seen from various points in the city. Most sailing and full-day sightseeing tours typically pass the massive bridge and discuss the feats required to create it. Many tours that venture outside the city of Lisbon also cross this bridge, bound for other popular cities and sights of Portugal.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The Vasco da Gama Bridge (Ponte Vasco da Gama) is a must-see for all modern architecture and bridge lovers.
  • There is a toll for northbound travelers only.
  • Clear and sunny days provide the best views of the bridge from many points in the city.

How to Get There
For great views of the bridge from Park of Nations, take the metro to Oriente station.

When to Get There
More than 50,000 vehicles use the Vasco da Gama Bridge (Ponte Vasco da Gama) each day, so it is best to avoid rush hours, generally 8am to 1pm and 5pm to 8pm. Lisbon teems with tourists in the summer months, so visit during the shoulder seasons to avoid crowds and congestion on the bridge.

Portugal’s Greatest Explorer

The Vasco da Gama Bridge was built for World Expo ’98, which conveniently coincided with the fifth centenary of the explorer’s India voyage in 1498. Da Gama was the the first European to make the voyage to India, and he returned a national hero who has been commemorated in numerous ways, with the bridge being the most famous. The bridge is so long that on cloudy days you can’t even see to the other side—quite like the explorer’s experience as he sailed into the unknown.

New Lisbon Segway Tour by Sitgo

New Lisbon Segway Tour by Sitgo

star-5
The segways are self-balancing futuristic vehicles and, despite looking quite difficult to control, they are surprisingly easy and fun to ride on. Our guides will help you perfecting it and getting ready to depart. Eastern Lisbon used to be an ugly industrial area until it was chosen as the site to host the last world fair of the 20th century, Expo 98. Since then it has reborn into a futuristic glass-and-steel district, home to some wonderful examples of modern architecture. Everywhere you turn, there is a glimpse of the river looking like an ocean (crossed by Europe's longest bridge), water volcanos erupting, wave-shaped benches, exotic greenery and public art by Portuguese and international artists. The famous cable-car overlooks it all, this unashamedly avant-garde side of Lisbon that contrasts with its old historic center.

2,5h Lisbon Sunset Sail with Portuguese appetizers and wine

2,5h Lisbon Sunset Sail with Portuguese appetizers and wine

star-5
Lisbon and a modern, fancy, spacious, comfy and well equipped sail boat is a perfect combination! A sailing active experience (for those which want's to): participate in all activities on board (hoist and trim the sails, maneuver the sailboat, tack, etc.), if you you're interested in. A relaxing and historical tour: sightseeing, chill & relaxing on the fancy and comfortable bow sun-pad while listening some music on the outside Bluetooth speaker. Is up to you: one, another or both! Because I'm a sailor (I'm part of a regatta team competing on local regattas) on one hand and a local at Lisbon on the other hand, this experience is all about sailing and know the most important and interesting details about what you see around. Is up to you which side (or both) you want to be. At the end the guest will have the opportunity to taste Portuguese appetizers (cheese and smoked pork meat) and drink some Portuguese wine while.
