Museum of Our Lady of Mercy of Porto (Museu da Misericórdia do Porto) Tours

The Museum of Our Lady of Mercy of Porto (Museu da Misericórdia do Porto, or MMIPO) is dedicated to the long history and charity work of the Holy House of Our Lady of Mercy (Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Porto), which was founded in 1498. Connected to the 16th-century church of Igreja da Misericórdia, the museum displays artifacts and sacred art.
The Basics
As well as covering the history and purpose of the Misericórdia do Porto, the Museu da Misericórdia do Porto exhibits its collection of 15th- to 17th-century sacred art and portraiture. Tours typically begin on the third floor, where you find an introduction to the society and its public works, as well as portraits of its many benefactors. The second floor displays several classical paintings and sculptures, as well as gold and silver ornaments and clerical vestments.
On the first floor you’ll find the church and the museum’s masterpiece: the Renaissance painting Fons Vitae (Fountain of Life), which depicts the Portuguese king Manuel I and his family around the blood of a crucified Christ.
