We had a wonderful tour in Lisbon with Vasco. He was an amazing tour guide, very informative and friendly. He drove us around in a van that was very nice and clean. We even stopped to have a coffee and a popular lemon drink. We highly recommend Vasco.

The guide was very nice and did a good job. We simply didn't see much of Jewish history. Perhaps the earthquake and inquisition destroyed much of it, but we were still hoping for more. I wouldn't recommend this quite frankly, but it isn't the fault of the guide, it's just that there wasn't much to see.

We will take this chance to explain a little bit more about the tour itself and the reason why we believe this tour is one of the best ways to know Lisboa. The city is more than 3.000 years of age. With such a long History, the kind of look people take to understand Lisboa will make the difference about the perception they will have of the city. Sephardic History in Lisboa is unavoidable. Not only because it was intense, dramatic and completely different from what it was in the other Jewish communities, but, most of all, because it is part of Portuguese culture. To understand Lisboa you will have to understand its Jewish ancestry. It is true that a big part of the city was destroyed and that most of the medieval buildings disappeared for ever. But, in spite of the destruction caused by the 1755 earthquake, Sephardic presence is still tangible in the city. And we must refer that a part of the city still preserve the Jewish buildings. In Alfama, the second oldest quarter in Europe, it is still possible to visit the Jewish quarter and to feel its medieval vibe. Besides that, we believe, in our company, that Tourism is much more than watching beautiful landscapes and admire old buildings. Tourism has to do with knowledge and with experience all the aspects of a country (or a city) Culture, History, Art and Society. And we really believe that the richness of all those aspects, together with the Portuguese Jewish community memories, are sufficiently significant to justify this tour. This was the best tour we’ve ever taken. Our guide, Vasco, was personable & knowledgeable — a real “mensch”. I take notes during our tours, so I have details to remember when I create my photobooks — he provided so much interesting information that I filled 15 pages of my notebook. While the majority of the tour was focused on Jewish sites & facts, he started the tour at a point high above the city, so we got a great overview of Lisbon. He also pointed out other interesting spots along the way. Mainly a walking tour — just some time in the van to get to the different areas. Adriana, our guide at the synagogue, was also very informative & personable — we learned a lot about the history of Jews in Portugal, & Lisbon specifically, as well as great background about the synagogue. Highly recommend this tour!

Our group of 6 enjoyed an outstanding half day tour of the Jewish sites in Lisbon. Our guide, Daniel, was friendly, helpful, very knowledgeable and eager to help us understand the Jewish history and current context in Lisbon. Our pick up and drop off at the cruise port was very easy. The van was clean and comfortable. Our visit to the local synagogue was a very special experience. Our walking tour through the old Jewish quarter of Lisbon was absolutely great. This tour was well worth the money. Ask for Daniel to be your guide. He is marvelous.

Dear Traveler, Thank you so much for your review! We take this opportunity to say something about the sources we used to make our tour. We recognize that Jewish Portuguese History is unknown for most of the people, including the Portuguese. For five hundred years, as a consequence of the Inquisition presence and its policy of terror, which lasted three hundred years, official History books and people in general forgot Portuguese Jewish Heritage. For that reason, there is a major responsibility when we recount Jewish Portuguese History. In the last years there is a strong interest about this theme. All over the country Jewish Heritage is being reborn, with the help of historians and archaeologists. B'nei Anussim are discovering their roots, by studying registers with hundreds of years (now completely available on the internet) and they are also understanding what is behind their families traditions, kept (at least) for fifteen generations. We highly recommend the reading of some historians and authors, to increase the knowledge about the ancient and strong presence of the Jews in Portugal. We will mention just a few names in a long list who have written about the subject: the historians Prof. Jorge Martins, Prof.ª Maria José Ferro Tavares, Prof. Carsten L. Wilke, Prof. António Borges Coelho, the Engineer Samuel Schwarz, who was committed with the B'nei Anussim rescue. We also recommend the book "The Last Kabbalist of Lisbon", written by Richard Zimler and based on the true events related by Berequias Zarco, during 1506, where you will be able to recognize many of the streets you walk through, in Lisboa. And with the help of these historians and authors you will be able to validate the information you received from Daniel. Thank you, again for leaving us such a wonderful review! OMG! - Starting with our guide Daniel - he was great. He was on time, courteous and very knowledgeable. His driving was safe and gave us a great historical account of the history of the Jewish people in not not only Lisbon but in Portugal and Spain as well. He showed us the Sephardic synagogue and the Ashkenazi one as well. The resurgence of Judaism in Lisbon and Portugal is impressive as are the historical and old manuscripts we saw as well. My wife and I would highly recommend this tour.
