After meeting your guide in central Lisbon, journey north in a cozy minivan to Almourol Castle one of Portugal’s most historical sites. Along the drive learn about the Knights Templar who used this castle to secure the boundary created by the Tagus River. Arrive at the river near the castle and enjoy a boat cruise to its gates. Then, wander through this medieval fortification and steep in its history.

Continue from here with a drive to the serene village of Constância. Hear about the renowned Portuguese poet Luís de Camões, famous for his poem 'Os Lusíadas,' who used to spend much of his time here. Alongside your guide, stroll through the illustrious Constância Park, where the Knights Templar used to savor the natural atmosphere. After your walk, stop for a delectable bite of an almond and egg treat (included).

Next, head to the charming city of Tomar, home to some of Portugal’s most impressive monuments and buildings. Gain insight from your guide about how the Knights Templar used a religious code to form the city, like the four monuments stationed around the city to resemble a crucifix. In Tomar, see famed monuments such as the 12th-century Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and visit the Castle of Tomar. Then, take a break for lunch at a local restaurant (own expense). Afterward, venture to the Gothic-style Church of Santa Maria do Olivais, a gorgeous 12th-century church erected for the Knights Templar.

Following Tomar, step back into your minivan for your return trip to Lisbon.

Tomar was a land given as a fief to the Templars. It was especially important in the 15th century when it was a center for Portuguese overseas expansion under Henry the Navigator, the Grand Master of the Order of Christ, the organization that succeeded the Templars in Portugal. In here we can visit the Church of Santa Maria do Olival, the headquarters of the Knights Templar and a pantheon of all Grand Masters.

Our guide Andre was extremely knowledgeable about the history and very engaging. We enjoyed his interactions at lunch and thoughout the adventure. I give him specifically high marks. he was wonderful. However the tour in general had some flaws You need to identify what your goals are for this tour. For my family w a teen, we would have preferred a little less time w historical presentations and additional time given for shopping opportunities. This needs to be specified in the overview. Every family is different and this is not to be critical of the incredible guide!! He did what he was supposed to do and did if extremely well. What is a definite flaw with the company and needs to be fixed: the van although it seats 9 it is not a comfortable seating for a long all day tour. we were cramped; we could not hear the guide’s explanation in the back-he needs an electronic mic. And the outside door had an issue which caused it to not close properly most of the time. The Driver was great in insuring safety but had to attempt multiple times in closing. This should have been checked out prior to releasing the vehicle. So we enjoyed our excursion. And have no regrets. Just wishes for a different focus. Be sure that when you book it meets your personal needs. If you want a focused historical trip....this is definitely the one for you AND ask for Andre.....IF they get the van fixed.

Time, Place, and Communication

Cool Tours has very comfortable vans for small groups. We had 8 plus the driver filling our van. However, when the airconditioning is on, people in the middle and far back seat cannot hear the drivers narration well even when the speaker is used. The meeting place was changed for a couple of people, and on the return to Lisbon we were dropped off at a place farther away than the pick up point. The sites were fabulous, well worth the ride, and our guide, Joanna knew a lot of hsitory for the Templars and kings, reglious communities, symbols, customs, and even foods of the region. She was very friendly and answered many extra questions.
