Half-Day Historical Walking Tour about Slave Trade in Lisbon

The tour was done personally and professionally. I learned so much about the history of Portugal. Rui has so much knowledge about the history and answered all of my questions. He was patient and kind to take us many areas to fulfill his job. It was a very educational but fun tour. I strongly recommend this tour to acquaint Portugal from the hidden face of the history.

Our walking tour with Rui was just full of information that shed light on the global history of enslavement of peoples from the beginning of recorded history, and especially how Portuguese explorations can be seen as invasions and exploitations when considered from a different perspective. With his carefully researched collection of visual images, Rui also showed us, beyond slavery, the varied positions and roles that people of color have held in Portugal throughout the centuries. Rui is a very good speaker who invited questions regularly and answered them with clarity and ease. He is clearly knowledgeable about Lisbon, its history and its current offerings, and was happy to share his knowledge with the group. We were delighted to spend time with Rui and highly recommend him and this tour for people of just about all ages who want to know more about this important dimension of Portuguese history.

Tour très émouvant et instructif qui dévoile l’histoire souvent cachée, voire ignorée, du peuple noir dans les anciennes sociétés européennes. On parle très souvent de l’esclavage dans le Nouveau Monde sans nous rendre compte que beaucoup de ceux qui ont été enlevés de l’Afrique ont par la suite été trafiqués aux métropoles « éclairées » de l’Europe. Ça fait triste qu’il n y ait ni un panneau à Lisbonne qui commémore les contributions exigées des habitants noirs de la ville pendant des siècles. Cependant, Rui était un guide très patient et savant et a pris le temps de nous montrer exactement où se trouvèrent les anciens marchés et entrepôt d’esclaves. En plus, il nous a recommandé un très bon resto mozambicain (Roda Viva) ! Ce tour était le top, et j’espère que de en plus de touristes séjournant à Lisboa en profiteront.
